Master Openings Faster with ChessVision.ai on Chrome — Quick Walkthrough
Overview
A concise guide to using the ChessVision.ai Chrome extension to identify positions from board images and accelerate opening study by converting positions into FEN, exploring engine analysis, and tracking recurring opening lines.
Quick setup
- Install the ChessVision.ai extension from the Chrome Web Store.
- Pin the extension to Chrome’s toolbar for easy access.
- Sign in if you want synced settings (optional).
Capture & scan
- Click the extension icon and choose “Scan board” or drag an image into the popup.
- Ensure the board image is clear, straight, and well-lit; crop to the board if needed.
- The extension returns the detected FEN and a move list (if applicable).
Use for opening study
- Generate FEN at the end of an opening sequence from a game score or screenshot.
- Paste the FEN into an opening explorer (or the extension’s built-in tools) to see frequency and typical continuations.
- Compare engine evaluations across key move choices to learn which lines give better chances.
- Save frequent positions or export PGN to build a focused opening repertoire.
Practical tips
- For tournament photos or phone snaps, straighten the perspective before scanning.
- If detection misreads pieces, correct the FEN manually in the popup.
- Combine scans from different games to identify common opponent responses.
- Use short sessions (10–20 minutes) targeting one opening variation at a time.
Example workflow (10 minutes)
- Scan a screenshot from an online game after move 10.
- Copy the FEN and open an online opening explorer.
- Check the top 3 continuations and engine evaluations.
- Note one improvement to try in your next game.
Limitations
- Accuracy depends on image quality and board orientation.
- Deep engine preparation still requires dedicated analysis time beyond quick scans.
Next steps
- Use the extension daily after online games to collect positions.
- Build a short repertoire file (PGN) of preferred lines and review weekly.
