Reader Mode Tips: Customize Font, Size, and Layout for Comfort
How to Enable Reader Mode in Any Browser
Chrome (desktop)
- Open a page with an article.
- Type chrome://flags/#enable-reader-mode in the address bar and press Enter.
- Set Reader Mode to Enabled and relaunch Chrome.
- When on a readable page, open the menu (three dots) → Distill page or click the reader icon in the address bar (if shown).
Chrome (Android)
- Open chrome://flags/#enable-reader-mode, enable it, and relaunch.
- Visit an article page, tap the menu → Distill page.
Firefox (desktop & mobile)
- Navigate to an article.
- Click the reader view icon (page/book icon) in the address bar, or press F9 (desktop).
- Use the sidebar controls to adjust font, theme, and text size.
Safari (macOS & iOS)
- Open an article page.
- Click the Reader button at the left of the address bar (macOS) or tap the AA icon in the address bar and choose Show Reader (iOS).
- Customize font and background using the same AA menu.
Edge (desktop & mobile)
- Open an article.
- Click the Reading view icon (book) in the address bar or select the menu → Immersive reader.
- Adjust text preferences, spacing, and grammar tools.
Opera
- Open a readable article.
- Click the Reader view icon in the address bar (if available).
- If not available, use extensions such as “Just Read” or “Reader View.”
Universal alternatives & extensions
- Install extensions: Reader View, Mercury Reader, Just Read, or Clearly for consistent reader mode across browsers.
- Use bookmarklets that strip clutter (search for “reader mode bookmarklet”).
- For PDFs or saved pages, paste content into distraction-free readers like Pocket, Instapaper, or Reader View in browser extensions.
Tips
- If reader mode isn’t appearing, try disabling extensions that alter page layout, or save the page and open it in a reader app.
- Use reader mode to improve focus, increase font size, switch to dark mode, and remove ads/sidebars.
